The original
from early Viking age (8 -900 AD) is cast in lead
and was found in the Viking town Kaupang near
Larvik, in south Norway. It was probably made by
craftsmen in Kaupang since it was never
completely finished.
The
pattern is well known on the European Continent. The
continental pattern indicates that craftsmen at
Kaupang were in close contact with Europe. What
the finished piece was meant to be is not quite
certain, possibly jewelry or decoration on a
buckle.
Copies are made as brooch
and pendant in bronze and silver.
